The City of Syracuse received a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to support the implementation of OJJDP’s comprehensive gang model, which includes five core strategies: social intervention; opportunities provision; community mobilization; suppression; and organizational change and development. The Syracuse initiative, Save Our Youth, was launched in 2014 with: a multi-disciplinary intervention team to address the needs of high-risk, gang-involved youth; school, summer, and employment programs for gang-involved and other high-risk youth; a project director to mobilize community resources and facilitate organizational change as needed; and targeted suppression and social control. As the research partner, we advised partners on the model, monitored implementation and impacts over the course of the two-year program period, and we conducted a process and outcome evaluation.
